Japan to Obtain CO2 Emissions Credits from Kazakhstan Project

Keywords: Climate Change Energy Conservation Government

The governments of Kazakhstan and Japan have signed an agreement that will allow Japan to obtain carbon dioxide emissions credits in return for improvements on a thermal power plant in the city of Oral, in West Kazakhstan State. The New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), affiliated with Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, will be in charge of this energy-saving project. The emissions reductions, calculated to be potentially 60,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually, will be counted as reductions for Japan.

Out of the 6 percent reductions in greenhouse gas emissions that Japan has committed to under the Kyoto Protocol, Japan plans to reduce 1.6 percent (19 million tonnes per year) through emissions trading such as this. In addition to initiatives at the country level, the Ministry plans to encourage similar trading among businesses in Japan.
