Saitama Nominates Five Municipalities for Eco-Town Project

Keywords: Local government Policy / Systems Renewable Energy

On November 22, 2011, Japan's Saitama Prefecture announced the selection of five candidate municipalities for its Saitama Eco-Town Project. The prefectural project aims to facilitate specific, municipality-wide initiatives to promote the use of local energy resources with energy generation, primarily from renewables, and intensive energy-saving efforts.

One of the five, the city of Sakado, plans to transform an existing residential area into an eco-town by renovating an old apartment complex and more effectively using unused land with private-sector initiatives. Another, the city of Higashi-Matsuyama, proposes to revitalize a shopping street by raising its level of eco-friendliness, as well as to promote residential power-generation systems to achieve 100% electricity independence in a city planning district.

The town of Yorii aims to establish cooperation between the Sainokuni Resource Recycling Plant, a prefectural recycling facility complex, and private companies. The city of Honjo intends to expand the initiative in the Honjo Waseda no Mori area -- where it is endeavoring to provide surplus heat and electricity generated from renewable energy sources to where it's needed and when needed -- to neighboring areas with the goal of making the entire city more eco-friendly.

Meanwhile, the city of Chichibu aims to become a model rural agricultural and mountainous community by taking advantage of its topographic features that includes bountiful forests. The city's plan includes wood biomass power generation, micro hydro power generation, and a demonstration test of an eco-house made of wood produced in Chichibu.
