Solar Frontier K.K., a subsidiary of Showa Shell Sekiyu K.K., has completed its third plant for its next-generation CIS solar panel, and started production partially in February 2011. In July the company increased its production scale to full capacity. The larger-scale production system and automated production process have significantly improved production efficiency when compared with previous plants.

For its CIS solar module, the company received The Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry's Award (Product and Technology Development Category) at "The Second Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Awards *", and The Ecology Design Award at Japan's 2007 Good Design Award due to their high economic efficiency, low environmental burden, and solid black design.

*The Monodzukuri Nippon Grand Awards are commendations from the Prime Minister, which were established with the goal of furthering the ambitions of talented people who support the concept of monodzukuri and to publicize their ideas, in order to develop and pass on to future generations the monodzukuri concept that has supported Japanese industry and culture.
