Nippon-Ham Fighters became the first professional baseball team in Japan to receive ISO 14001 certification for environmental management standards on February 5, 2009.

Since 2007, the team has been proactively engaged in environmental issues, including using biodiesel fuel (BDF) for its delivery trucks of team apparel and merchandise. In June 2008, the team started a new project, named "Fighters Eco Project," to undertake environmental initiatives with long-term goals.

As a part of this project, the team has been planting trees in a national forest stretching across Chitose City to Lake Shikotsu in the southwest area of Hokkaido, where many trees were fallen by Typhoon No.18 in September 2004. During the 2009 season, 126 seats are being sold at 1,500 yen (about U.S.$15) for adults and 500 yen (about U.S.$5) for children for every regular season game played at Sapporo Dome, the home of the Fighters. Fifty percent of the proceeds will go toward purchasing Japanese white birch and aodamo (Fraxinus lanuginosa) seedling trees.

This initiative will make it possible to plant about 300 trees per game, or 17,000 trees during one season. The team aims to contribute to the restoration of the forest and play an essential role in the region as a team based in Hokkaido, which is rich in nature.
