Seven-Eleven Japan Co., one of Japan's leading convenience store chains, opened an eco-friendly store on November 14, 2008, in Kyoto City. The store is equipped with energy-efficient light-emitting diode (LED) display boards and the world's first water-heater system utilizing waste heat generated by refrigeration machines. Abiding by the City's landscape ordinance, the company has constructed the new store in a Japanese architectural style with a gabled roof and green spaces, giving due consideration to the height and size of the store as well as its color scheme.

By introducing LED displays instead of conventional florescent counterparts, the store's annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions will be reduced by 0.57 tons or 54 percent. Moreover, by using the waste heat boiler, another reduction of 2.41 tons of CO2 is expected, down 92 percent when compared with a conventional water heater. The company estimates that the total annual CO2 reduction at the store will be 7.52 tons or 12.6 percent with all its energy-saving efforts, which also include tightly regulating lighting, air conditioning and refrigeration devices.

The Kyoto store is an advanced version of the company's experimental store opened in February 2008 in Nagano Prefecture, which features various eco-friendly systems and equipment. Seven-Eleven Japan plans to construct future stores across the nation based on the pro-environment design of the Kyoto store.
