Standardization of Information Disclosure Underway for Chemical Composition of Products

Keywords: Chemicals Manufacturing industry

Japanese manufacturing companies have established an association to standardize the information management system for chemical substances. The companies include Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Fuji Photo Film Co., TDK Corp. and Mitsubishi Chemical Corp., which manufactures materials and parts for electrical/precision machinery and automobiles.

The European Union (EU) issued RoHS Directives (Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substance in Electrical and Electronic Equipment) on July 1, 2006, which principally bans the use of six substances, including lead. In spring 2007, the EU also intends to start a system called REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals), which necessitates registration to use target substances and the implementation of safety protocols. Such stringent controls over potentially hazardous chemicals are now increasingly demanded all over the world.

In response to such trends, these companies and industry associations launched the "Japan Article Management Promotion-consortium (JAMP)" on September 11, 2006. It plans to develop a unified format for the information management and disclosure that indicate the types and amounts of chemical substances present in products in 2007, in addition to establishing international standards.
