Japanese Soccer Team Conducting Two Eco-friendly Campaigns

Tokushima Vortis, a football team in Division 2 of the J.League (Japan Professional Football League), has been conducting two eco-friendly campaigns recently--the "Declaration for Eco Stadium" and "Declaration to Reduce Carbon Dioxide."

The "Declaration for Eco Stadium" campaign promotes waste reduction at the Tokushima Naruto Stadium, the team's home stadium, by asking visitors to take their trash home after games while encouraging them to reuse the Eco Tumbler, the team's original plastic cup for beverages. They can get a discount of 50 yen (about U.S. 40 cents) for a soft drink and 100 yen (about U.S. 80 cents) for a beer at the stadium if they bring their own tumblers when they buy drinks.

The "Declaration to Reduce CO2" campaign aims to ease traffic congestion and cut CO2 emissions by promoting carpooling. Carpools of four or five people to the stadium are being encouraged in 2006 (the average number of passengers per car was 3.5 in 2005).

Out of 31 teams playing in the J.League during the 2006 season, two others (Shonan Bellmare and Vegalta Sendai) have also introduced the Eco Tumbler system.
