Shipments of environment-friendly vehicles increased sharply in fiscal 2004, according to statistics released by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association (JAMA) on its website on September 21, 2005.

Shipments of all kinds of vehicles rose to 4,206,921, an increase of 4.7 percent over the previous fiscal year, but shipments of hybrid vehicles shot up 56.8 percent, to 66,540. Other types of eco-vehicles shipped included 17 electric vehicles, a 65.3 percent decrease from the previous year, 3,265 natural gas vehicles, a 15.2 percent decrease, and 3,121 diesel alternative (LPG) vehicles, a 3.8 percent decrease. As for fuel cell vehicles, statistics for which were compiled for the first time in fiscal 2003, only four units were shipped, down from 10 a year earlier.

In FY 2003, JAMA started to certify fuel-efficient and low emission vehicles; five categories based on FY 2005 standards use stars to signify the level of the vehicle's reduction of exhaust emissions. These categories are: four stars signifying 75 percent or more exhaust reduction; three stars for a reduction of 50-74 percent; two stars for 25-49 percent; one star for less than 25 percent; and no star for no reduction.

Shipments of FY2005 standard-based four-star vehicles that were also fuel-efficient experienced a massive increase to 928,723 in 2004, a 1,164.8 percent increase over the previous year, and fuel-efficient FY2005 three-star vehicles numbered 2,442,167, a 572.8 percent increase. Fuel-efficient vehicles with three stars based on FY 2000 standards numbered 229,505, a 90.1 percent decrease; fuel-efficient FY2000 two-star vehicles numbered 322,059, a decrease of 46.2 percent, and FY2000 one-star fuel-efficient vehicles numbered 211,520, a 48.7 percent decrease. The association noted the particularly significant increases in FY2005 three- and four-star vehicles
