Japan's Weather Agency Sets Up Global Environment and Marine Dept.

Keywords: Climate Change Government Policy / Systems

The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) reorganized its structure and established the Global Environment and Marine Department on July 1, 2005. The aim of the reorganization was to improve management systems related to the global environment, marine monitoring and weather disaster prevention.

The department addresses the full range of global environment and marine issues, including greenhouse gas observation and climate change research. JMA intends to enhance the capability of observation, monitoring, forecasting and information services in order to take stronger measures on the global environmental problems that are threatening the world, such as global warming, climate change, ozone layer depletion, desertification and marine pollution.

The agency also created a Satellite Program Division in the Observations Department and a post of Senior Coordinator for Weather Disaster Prevention in the Forecast Department, to devise effective disaster prevention schemes concerning weather observation and information services. The Satellite Program Division plays a key role in formulating long-term plans for use and management of weather satellites. The Senior Coordinator liaises with relevant ministries and agencies to deal with sophisticated disaster prevention information such as weather warnings.
