Chemical Industry Establishes Global Warming Countermeasure Council

Keywords: Chemicals Climate Change Government Manufacturing industry Policy / Systems

Five chemical industry associations - the Japan Chemical Industry Association, the Japan Petrochemical Industry Association, the Japan Soda Industry Association, the Vinyl Environmental Council, and the Japan Chemical Fibers Association - jointly established the "Chemical Industry Associations - Global Warming Countermeasure Council" on October 19, 2004. The Council will be expected to propose appropriate measures to prevent global warming while protecting the environment and economy.

The chemical industry published a voluntary environmental action program to promote measures for addressing global warming in 1997 and since 1998 has achieved consistent results. However, it opposes introduction of the "climate change tax" and "national emission trading system" being proposed by the Committee on Global Environment of the national government's Central Environment Council.

The newly established chemical industry council will not only study and implement measures on this issue as a team but also take every opportunity to speak out on the future involvement of the chemical industry in economic development in harmony with the environment.
