Ministry Offers Eco Software for Small Offices

Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE) announced on July 2, 2004, that it had developed software to support the environmental activities of small offices. Named "Kankyo Daifukucho", or Eco Ledger, the software is based on Eco Action 21, the ministry's program to encourage various businesses to undertake environmental activities.

This transaction database software is designed in accordance with the 2004 version of Eco Action 21, targeting offices, transport, and service businesses whose operations have relatively small environmental impacts. After data and expenses relating to electricity, natural gas and other fuels have been inputted, the software calculates the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and utility expenses, and compares the values and averages with those of the previous month.

By recording the data using this software, users can see how their environmentally-conscious efforts can help reduce both CO2 emissions and costs.

Eco Action 21 was first formulated in 1996, with the aim of encouraging small- and medium-sized businesses to make voluntary efforts to determine their impacts on the environment, to set goals, and then take action to reduce their CO2 emissions and other environmental impacts.
