Sharp to Promote Appliance Recycling in Germany

Sharp Corp. has announced that its distributing subsidiary in Germany, Sharp Electronics (Europe) GmbH, will promote recycling of used home electrical appliances jointly with Loewe AG and Philips Consumer Electronics. This collaboration aims to promote compliance with the EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE), which will begin placing liability for used products on the manufacturers starting in August 2005.

In accordance with the way WEEE will be enforced in Germany, "the Elektro-Altgerate-Register (Electrical-Appliances Register; EAR)" was established in collaboration with manufacturers. This organization will calculate the volume of electric & electronic appliances to be gathered by local governments determine collection sites and formulate industry-wide rules, for example, on managing compliance by manufacturers with respect to product liability.

Besides participating in the EAR, the three companies noted above will try to streamline their collecting and recycling services and minimize related costs by entering into joint contracts with local recycling companies, with a view to utilizing high economies of scale resulting from their partnership.

The EU Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is a law for recycling of electrical and electronic equipment. Complying with this directive, the EU member countries are to enforce their domestic laws by August 13 2004, and the manufacturers are to be required to implement the collecting and recycling of their products from August 13, 2005.
