In January and February 2004, Japan's Forestry Agency hosted events called 'Fiscal 2003 Forestry Guidance' at 12 locations throughout the country. This event series was part of the Agency's Green Employment Program, which provides urban residents interested in forestry work with the opportunity to learn about forestry. During this year's events, experienced forestry workers advised 5,410 participants, more than in the previous year's events, offering training guidance as well as basic knowledge for working in forests. The age range of participants, which included many women, extended from the 20s to the 50s.

The program was initially launched in December 2002, and aims to foster a new generation of core forestry specialists among those who hope to work in the industry. As a next step, it plans to employ these specialists in forestry business entities such as forestry cooperatives, and encourage them to settle in underpopulated mountainous areas. This was the second series of events following the first one in FY 2002.

After receiving guidance, participants have the chance to join a two-day basic training session and a five-day practical training session to learn the basic knowledge and skills needed to enter the forest industry. Participants in this introductory training program become eligible for a job under an emergency job creation subsidy program. This job normally lasts for six months, up to one year maximum Upon completion of this short-term contract, participants go through a screening process for registration as 'Green Trainees,' and are offered permanent positions after another year of training in professional skills.

Through this program, the Forestry Agency aims to encourage people to have children who will grow up in woodlands. Forests protect air, water, soil, plant diversity and marine environments, and so are essential for maintaining a sustainable planet. To preserve fresh green forests and our precious Earth for those who will be alive 100 years from now, the Agency is focusing on the important role played by forest industries and by people well-versed in raising trees and plants.
