Power Generation Using Chicken Manure Incineration Heat to Start in Miyazaki

Miyazaki Biomass Recycle Co. in Kawaminami Town, Miyazaki Prefecture, in southern Japan will launch a power generation business by March 2005, using the heat generated by incinerating chicken manure.

The company expects that the chicken manure supply from poultry farmers will increase, since the law for proper management and increased use of livestock waste will require livestock breeders to properly dispose of the livestock waste, starting in November 2004.

In its plant, Miyazaki Biomass Recycle will incinerate the chicken manure purchased from poultry farmers and generate electricity by turning a steam turbine with the incineration heat. The maximum output will be about 11,000 kilowatts. About 132,000 tons of chicken manure is expected to be incinerated per year. The company will sell the generated power to Kyushu Electric Power Co., and the incineration ash to fertilizer mills as raw material for fertilizer.

Miyazaki Biomass Recycle was established in May, 2003, funded by Nishinippon Environmental Energy Co., a subsidiary of Kyushu Electric Power, and poultry farmers in Kawaminami Town. The construction of its plant is underway and the company is planning a test run in November 2004.
