Idea Competition for "Eco-Community" Project Funding

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Government Local government NGO / Citizen Policy / Systems Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

Japan's Ministry of the Environment (MOE) held an open competition on proposals for model projects to build a sound material-cycle society, involving citizens' organizations or business in cooperation with local governments. The winning proposals will be funded by the ministry as trial projects. The competition was open to applicants from June 10 to July 22, 2003.

Trial projects could involve innovative model projects that could be applied to other local communities, such as initiatives involving the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, recycle) and green purchasing. The operating bodies of the projects can be private corporations or voluntary organizations (corporate status not required). The ministry will cover all direct expenses needed for the launch and trial implementation of the selected projects. The grants will range approximately from 1 million to 10 million yen (about U.S.$8,000 to $84,000) per project.
