The NTT-ME CORPORATION has developed a recycling device, the "Re-Up Lactic Acid System", that creates animal fodder from food waste, and will start to market it in September 2002.
In this system, high-speed fermentation equipment for food waste treatment, called the "Bio-Runner", produces compost, and lactobacilli convert the compost into feed for livestock. The processing capacity of the system is 2.5 metric tons a day and the price is about 100 million yen [$850,000 @ $1=118yen].
This processing system could expand the use of treated food waste which until now had been used mainly as fertilizer may now also be used for feed for livestock.
