Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. plans to launch sales of a 1 kW cogeneration unit, CHP (Combined Heat and Power) system, for home use later in fiscal 2002. A test program started on July 19, 2002 at 86 homes and housing exhibit sites in Japan. By testing the unit under different living conditions, the company aims to verify the unit's performance, energy-saving and ease of operation.

The 1 kW engine, developed by Honda Motor Co., Ltd., runs on natural gas and generates electricity for home use. The exhaust heat from the engine is used to provide hot water, to heat floors, and to heat and dry bathrooms. The total energy efficiency of the unit can reach 85 percent, with 20 percent coming from electricity and 65 percent from exhaust heat.

Osaka Gas sells the largest number of cogeneration units in Japan.
