Keywords: Government Policy / Systems

Japan's Ministry of the Environment recently acquired ISO 14001 certification, making it the first ministry in the central government to do so for its environmental management systems. Over 280 local governments and public entities and about 9,000 business units have already acquired this certification in Japan. The Ministry now sets to work to meet specific environmental targets, such as the use of recycled paper, the introduction of low-emission vehicles, conserving of electricity and reduction in the amount of taxi rides taken. Administrative vice minister is assigned to manage the Ministry's environmental performance, and some officials are assigned in each division and section to promote efforts. One of the distinctive characteristics shown in its goal of public awareness-raising. The Ministry also urges its staff to volunteer for environmental activities.
