An initiative to help promote sustainable development of cities in emerging nations was launched by a group of Japanese companies on October 27, 2010. Named the Japanese Conference for Overseas Development of Eco-Cities (J-CODE), the conference aims to offer packages of environmentally friendly technologies and services. Chaired by the Director General of the Institute of Industrial Science at Tokyo University, J-CODE has been joined by 51 businesses from a wide range of industries, including construction, real estate, finance, energy, electricity and machinery.
In China and many Southeast Asian countries, rapid urbanization combined with continued population growth, has led to a variety of environmental problems, resulting in the need for sustainable urban development. Japan's expertise in urban development, evidenced by the significant advances in urban infrastructure made over a short period of time after World War II, is expected to help considerably.
To respond such needs, J-CODE will introduce Japanese technologies and environmental standards for urban development, offer proposals, and as a multi-industry team work with local authorities to help promote sustainable planning and development of cities.
