Keywords: Climate Change Manufacturing industry

Sony Corp. announced on July 26, 2011, that it has ended its period for carrying out the Mid-Term Environmental Project "Green Management 2010," which stipulated a target environmental load reduction over the five-year period from FY2006 to FY2010. The company also said it has exceeded its targets in almost all items, including the achievement of an approximately 30% reduction in total greenhouse gas emissions from all business sites, as compared with FY2000 levels.

Various measures initiated as part of the project have resulted in about 1,530,000 tons of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions across all Sony-group business sites in FY2010 -- a 31% reduction from FY2000, which substantially exceeds the initial target of 7% set in "Green Management 2010."

In order to reduce energy-caused CO2, Sony has taken the following concrete actions at home and abroad: replacement of materials having a high global warming coefficient with better alternatives in production; introduction of state-of-the-art facilities and optimum operation of in-house energy-saving by consulting with in-house energy-saving specialists.

As for other main targets, Sony achieved the following: a 54% reduction in waste from plants, as compared with FY2000, exceeding the targeted 40% reduction; a 41% reduction of water use in plants as compared with FY2000, exceeding the targeted 20% reduction; and fully meeting reduction targets for yearly power consumption set for each product category.
