In an attempt to develop, manage and spread advanced systems for water recycling, Water Plaza was completed on December 14, 2010, in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. This facility was jointly planned and constructed by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Kitakyushu City, and the Global Water Recycling and Reuse Solution Technology Research Association (GWSTA).

While concern about water and energy problems is growing worldwide, Japan is in need of urgent development of innovative technology and management methods for recycling and reuse of treated sewage water, as well as drastic energy-saving measures. As such know-how is dispersed among the national government, municipalities and private companies, the development of new technologies and information via private-public partnerships is required.

Against this backdrop, Water Plaza is intended to collect unique Japanese innovations and the world's most advanced technologies, accumulate know-how and transmit information on water recycling systems to the world. Water Plaza has a demonstration plant and a testbed. In the demonstration plant, water is produced at lower cost and with less environmental impact through the integration of seawater desalination and reuse of sewer water. Using six types of water produced in the demonstration plant, advanced water treatment technologies are developed and demonstrated in the testbed.

As Japan's first comprehensive water recycling system facility for both operational and performance tests, this project is expected to be a model for municipalities, the national government and private companies to cooperate with one another by utilizing their unique resources.
