Seven & i Launches Campaign Targeting Energy-Saving at Home

Seven & i Holdings Co., a major Japanese retail chain operator, announced on July 26, 2010, that it would launch a "Seven & i Energy-Saving Ecological Discount Campaign" that aims to reduce the electric power consumption of the households representing about 110,000 employees of the corporate group. The campaign will run for three summer months from August through October when annual power consumption reaches its peak.

The campaign encourages employees to save energy at home by, for example, changing temperature settings for air conditioners or reducing standby electricity. If the electricity consumption during the three-month period is reduced by more than a designated target compared with that in the same period last year, electronic money points worth five million yen (about US$60,000) in total will be rewarded to 1,300 employees in a drawing.

In 2008, Seven & i Holdings formulated its "Environmental Declaration" and the "Fundamental Policies Relating to Measures to Contribute to the Prevention of Global Warming," and has been working hard to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through energy-saving strategies at its retail outlets. GHG emissions in Japan increased in 2008, with a notable 34.2 percent increase in household sector emissions versus 1990 levels. This accounts for about 14 percent of total emissions, highlighting the urgent need for reduction efforts by both companies and households.

The holding company says that this campaign will raise employees' awareness at home and will contribute to greenhouse gas emissions reductions through their own energy-saving lifestyles.
