Compost Reduces Waste and Produces Flowers

Local governments in Japan have been reducing kitchen waste by composting it. Toda and Warabi Cities, Saitama Prefecture and their interim disposal center associations began running a flower center on May 21, 2010. The center produces compost from kitchen waste that residents bring in using a designated bucket, and uses this compost to produce around 80,000 flower seedlings each year. By allowing the residents to receive seedlings in exchange for their domestic garbage, the center aims to fill the cities with flowers.

The center has an administrative building for visitors, a cultivation building for composting, and three greenhouse nurseries, together with a biotope and nature preservation area. The two cities intend to use the center for promoting environmental education and increasing employment opportunities for disabled and elderly people.

Meanwhile, Kawasaki city, Kanagawa prefecture, started receiving applications on May 24, 2010, for subsidies to citizen groups working to recycle kitchen garbage through activities such as composting.
