Oisix Inc., an online mail-order store that sells organic and additive-free foods, launched a new section on its website on February 25, 2010, to tempt price-conscious people to try its fruits and vegetables. Oisix is offering small samples for 100 yen (about U.S.$1.08) each, excluding tax, or by the pack.

Since consumers usually regard organic and specially cultivated vegetables and fruits as expensive, they often give up on the idea of buying them, even if they just want to try them. The company aims to encourage more people to try their products by offering them at an affordable price of 100 yen and packaging them in small quantities, often using irregular-sized vegetables, and effectively using surplus vegetables.

The company has started with just ten items, including a package of Brussels sprouts (about 40 grams), one small-sized apple in a pack, and 250-gram package of irregular-sized carrots, and plans to increase the number of items in future.
