Car Sharing Service Starts at Convenience Stores

Japanese convenience store chains Ministop Co., and Three F Co. started a car sharing service on the store premises in partnership with Japan Car Sharing Inc. from October 1, 2009. Car sharing service using convenience store parking lots is the first initiative of this kind in Japan.

Car sharing is a new type of car use that allows multiple users to share one vehicle. Members are allowed to book and use a car for short periods of time, and no maintenance or fixed costs are necessary. The service is economical and helps to reduce travel mileage and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per user.

This initiative aims at enhancing user-friendliness of the service for members who regularly use the convenience stores. Potential customers are the ones living within 800-meter radius from a particular outlet location. The companies plan to increase the number of the stores providing the service, and explore the possibility of introducing electric vehicles and battery chargers to reduce environmental impact.
