Sagawa Express Expanding Parcel Delivery Using Three-Wheeled Power-Assisted Cycles

Sagawa Express Co., a major parcel delivery company in Japan, unveiled on August 26, 2009, a new human-powered, electric-assisted three-wheeled cycle designed specifically for delivering packages. The company also announced its plan to expand its use of the cycles nationwide from the Kansai region, where more than 50 of the tricycles were . Tricycle delivery is part of its initiative to reduce its environmental impacts, a practice the company has been actively promoting. The tricycle has a number of advantages in that it emits no exhaust, it can execute tight turns, and it can help reduce traffic congestion and parking needs.

The new cycle is an electric-assisted, three-wheeled unit equipped with an aluminum container that can hold up to 80 kilograms of packages. Measuring 2.5 meters long and 0.9 meters wide, it has a transparent resin roof to allow delivery in the rain, and its six-speed transmission and electric power assist features reduce the rider's work when going up hills. The right and left brakes operate independently, and the two rear wheels can be locked
separately.
