Nishinomiya to Install Photovoltaic Panels at All Schools

Nishinomiya City, Hyogo Prefecture, announced its new general plan in May 2008. Under the plan, the city will promote the installation of photovoltaic panels in every school in the city and the construction of green walls in public facilities. The plan comprehensively and systematically demonstrates the city's commitment to projects and measures for long-term regional development.

Following the third general plan that expires during FY 2008, the plan consists of five main projects that will take lead roles in promoting the city's development. Photovoltaic panel installation in all schools, and the construction of wall greenery comprise one of these projects. Nishinomiya City, which declared itself to be an Environmental Learning City in December 2003, has thus defined an approach toward environmental issues and has effectively implemented its efforts. The plan's goal is for citizens, including pre-school children and students, to realize the importance of the environment in which they live, and to participate willingly in activities for environmental learning and preservation.

The rest of the four leading projects are related to the planning of multi-generation communication programs, and the development of sports facilities and water fronts, as well as the city forest for friendly communication. The city called for public comments on the new general plans from May 29 to 30 June, 2008. Between July and October 2008, the comments will be used as a basis for discussions in the city council.
