Movies Shown with Green Power

Toho Cinemas Ltd., which operates large movie theater complexes in Japan, recently launched the "Green Sunday" campaign, in which green power will be used to screen movies on Sundays. The campaign will be conducted from June to December 2008 at its movie complexes in Roppongi, Tokyo and Nijo, Kyoto.

As the volume of power spent in both theaters on Sundays during the campaign is estimated at 288,000 kilowatt hours, Toho Cinemas will purchases the equivalent amount of green power certificates from Energy Green Inc., a natural energy service provider. This is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 108 tons. The purchased green electricity will be generated by Minami-Kyushu Biomass Power Plant in Kagoshima prefecture, in the southern part of Kyushu region.

Toho Cinemas screened the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" using green power when it was released in January 2007, and this was the first attempt of its kind among Japanese movie theater operators.
