Metropolitan Municipalities to Jointly Tackle Global Warming

Keywords: Climate Change Local government

Governors and mayors of the Tokyo metropolitan area and representatives of regional business communities held a forum in Yokohama city on April 21, 2008, and announced plans to jointly take practical action to tackle global warming. Participating municipalities were Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama prefectures and Yokohama, Kawasaki, Chiba and Saitama cities.

Aiming to realize a low-carbon society, the participants decided to expand their approaches by collaborating and sharing the best examples for promoting energy conservation or renewable energy that each metropolitan municipality has been practicing, such as the use of solar energy or electric cars. To raise awareness about global warming and promote environmental education, they will incorporate and utilize the campaigns carried out by the private sector and the government in a variety of scenes.

In addition, along with strengthening the support of environment technology to Asian countries, the group will set the African area as a new target and consider international assistance and support for developing countries in the environment field.

They also agreed to support a campaign called Eco Wave that encourages residents and businesses to simultaneously turn off their lights at 20:00, on July 7, the first day of the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit.
