Keywords: Climate Change Local government

To commemorate the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit in July 2008, the city of Sapporo is organizing the Children's World Summit for the Environment in Sapporo, scheduled for June 27 to 29. Considering that youth will soon grow up to be the key members of society, Sapporo is inviting young people from Japan and other countries and providing an opportunity for them to learn, think, and share experiences about global environmental issues, since the city aims to become an environmental capital of the world. Their achievement will be announced to the world as a message for the future.

The 100 participants range in age from 11 to 15 years old, with 40 from overseas and the other 60 from Japan. Ken Noguchi, a world-famous alpinist, will give a lecture from the global point of view to raise children's awareness of environmental issues, and the representatives of each country will make a presentation. All participants will exchange opinions and study together to prepare their message. Field activities and workshops are also planned to deepen their understanding of nature and environmental issues.
