In a first for a major broadcaster in Japan, Tokyo Broadcasting System Inc. (TBS) was able to achieve virtually zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions using electricity from green sources in its production and broadcast of the World Championships in Athletics, held in Osaka for nine days from August 25, 2007. With a green electricity certificate issued by Japan Natural Energy Co., the power TBS used to broadcast the championships came from wind and biomass sources, resulting in a saving of almost 240 tons of CO2 emissions that would have been produced using conventional sources.

The total amount of electricity used throughout the scheduled competitions, about 620,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), included the power used to transmit 80 hours of programming, for the broadcasting equipment in the Nagai Stadium in Osaka, and for 27 TBS-affiliated TV stations belonging to the Japan News Network (JNN) to broadcast the competitions.

TBS said that its estimated CO2 reduction goal was basically as expected,, and through its strong commitment to environmental conservation, it has shown what media companies can do in a united effort with affiliated businesses. The company also announced that, together with TBS Vision Co., a group firm, it has signed up for 3 million kWh of green electricity annually. TBS plans to use the green power in their eco-events and to broadcast their environmental programs to achieve zero CO2 emissions.
