Hitachi Starts 'Super Eco-Factory' Certification System

The Hitachi Group announced on June 25, 2007, that it has created a "Super Eco-Factory" certification system and that it has certified nine of its facilities as of June 2007. Using industry-leading pro-environmental criteria, the group expects the system to serve as a measure for reducing carbon dioxide emissions by seven percent below 1990 levels by fiscal 2010.

"Super Eco-Factories" are environmentally friendly facilities that have made significant progress in promoting energy conservation, reducing chemical material discharge and recycling resources. To be certified, the facilities must attain six times lower energy consumption than the mandatory level set by the Law Concerning the Rational Use of Energy. Hitachi aims to certify 30 more "Super Eco-Factories" out of their approximately 300 facilities to have a substantial environmental impact by 2010.

The group has also been implementing the "Super Eco-Product" certification system since fiscal 2006. "Super Eco-Products" are environmentally friendly products and services the group has produced while reducing the environmental impact and resource consumption. To be certified, products should be ten times more efficient, either in global warming prevention or resource consumption, than conventional products. As of the end of March 2006, 40 products were certified as "Super Eco-Products," including the flagship DVD camera, which is 51 times more efficient in global warming prevention and 85 times more efficient in resource consumption.
