Fujitsu Globally Expands IT Goods Recycling Service

Keywords: Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

The Fujitsu Group announced a plan to operate its IT product-recycling services at nine locations in six countries in North America and the APAC region, in addition to their ongoing services in Japan and Europe.

Although rapidly advancing information technology contributes to greater efficiency and convenience in society, the endlessly accumulating volume of discarded IT equipment is causing a greater risk of personal information leaks and adverse effects on the environment. For this reason, the extended responsibility of producers has been socially accepted. The Japanese Law for the Effective Utilization of Resources came into effect in April 2001, and so did the EU Directive on Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment in February 2003.

To cope with such regulations, the Fujitsu Group decided to begin recycling services in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines, in addition to its existing operations in America, Australia and Canada, from May 2007. Two more bases were set up in the US and Canada in April 2007, making Fujitsu's IT product-recycling services more widely available on a global scale.

As part of Fujitsu's IT-recycling services, the collected equipment is properly disposed of by local recycling dealers. In the US, Fujitsu has been collecting and refurbishing used point-of-sales (POS) system products for resale since 2002, and the service is used by approximately 40 percent of their customers. In Australia about 250 tons used POS systems were collected for recycling from large retailers from April 2006 through March 2007. In the Philippines, prior to the official commencement of the service in May 2007, 27 tons of various types of electronic waste were recycled in a pilot project from June 2006 through February 2007.
