Tokyo Gov't Works to Expand Residential Use of Solar Energy

On February 7, 2007, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) announced that it has established a study panel to vastly expand the use of solar power. Its objective is to introduce solar power equivalent to one million kilowatts into houses and apartments in Tokyo.

Establishing a metropolitan-wide strategic committee, the Committee for Development of a Carbon-Minus Urban Environment, on January 26, 2007, the TMG started the 10-Year Carbon-Minus Tokyo Project with the goal of vastly reducing CO2 emissions in Tokyo. As part of the project, the study panel will examine how to expand solar energy use in cooperation with academic experts and pioneering private companies by setting up sub-panels for solar energy generation and thermal utilization

The first meeting of the study panel was held on March 14, 2007, and was attended by four academic experts, nine company representatives and two persons from the TMG. The panel plans to issue an interim report in July 2007 for discussion by various companies, and to release a final report in February 2008 for implementation of measures starting from fiscal 2008.
