Biomass Mark Labeling Starts

The Japan Organics Recycling Association launched the "Biomass Mark" labeling program, which evaluates and certifies products using biomass resources, on August 1, 2006.

Biomass, organic material derived from photosynthetic organisms, is considered to be useful in reducing dependence on fossil resources and building a sustainable society. The labeling program aims to encourage consumers to understand and support biomass use and to promote wider application of biomass-derived products by identifying such products with this mark.

The design of the Biomass Mark features a clover growing on the earth. While certification does not currently require a minimum amount of biomass material to be used in the product, the percentage of biomass content may be printed on the products by the manufacturers.
