Shops Honored with FY 2005 Prizes for Promoting Energy-efficient Goods

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Energy Conservation Government

A total of 108 shops, including 90 large and 18 small shops out of 373 and 36 applicants, respectively, were selected as "Active Promoters of Energy-efficient Goods" by the Energy Conservation Center of Japan, in 2006. Among them, seven shops with outstanding performances won FY 2005 Energy Conservation Awards, including the Environment Minister's Award, the Economy, Trade and Industry Minister's Award, the Agency of Natural Resources and Energy Director-General's Award and the Energy Conservation Center Chairman's Award.

The citation system started in FY 2003 to promote energy-saving products by evaluating shops' presentation of energy-saving information to their customers, sales promotion of energy-efficient goods and other related activities. The center's Energy-Saving Product Promotion Committee examines self-evaluation documents and carries out on-site inspections for performance in five categories: 1) management policy; 2) staff knowledgeability and enthusiasm; 3) purchase accessibility to energy-efficient goods; 4) sales performance; and 5) energy-saving efforts.

Until FY 2004, applicants were required to have at least 800 square meters of floor space, but in FY 2005 the minimum area requirement was reduced to 500 square meters, while allowing shops of less than 500 square meters to compete under a different category.
