School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Opens in Miyagi University

Keywords: Food University / Research institute

Miyagi University opened its School of Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences on April 1, 2005, with 51 teachers and its first class of 127 students. The curriculum covers subjects related to the food industry from production to consumption, and also provides opportunities for research and social activities in relation to the business, environment and safety aspects of the food industry.

The school aims to explore a new academic sphere through comprehensive education and research, defining the food industry as a sequence from food production and processing to distribution and consumption. This is the first such curriculum to be offered to students in a Japanese university and contains three departments:
(1) Department of Farm Management; study and research of agriculture and livestock,
(2) Department of Food Management; study and research of food & beverage manufacture and processing and restaurant management,
(3) Department of Environmental Sciences; study and research of environmental issues involving the food industry.

To contribute to the development of the local community, the school also aims to seek cooperation and communication with relevant companies, non-profit organizations and local governments as it educates food and agriculture professionals using sophisticated, practical methods.
