Environment Ministry Posts Road Traffic Noise Map on Web

Keywords: Government Transportation / Mobility

Since November 1, 2004, Japan's Ministry of the Environment has been posting a national traffic noise map on the Internet.

The sources for information on the map are reports sent to the Ministry on the results of car traffic noise monitoring performed by prefectures and major cities under the Noise Control Law. This data is processed by the Environmental Information Center at the National Institute for Environmental Studies and released on its web site, the Environment GIS (Japanese Only).

By clicking on the map, viewers can find out road noise levels for cities, wards, towns and more detailed areas around the country. They can also see the daytime, night, and whole-day noise levels in terms of environmental noise standards in areas along roads. Annual reports on road traffic noise can also be viewed and downloaded.

The data currently being posted are based on surveys carried out in fiscal 2002. The Ministry plans to provide additional information yearly.
