Free IBM Japan Service Advises on Recycling of Used PCs

Keywords: Eco-business / Social Venture Manufacturing industry Reduce / Reuse / Recycle

IBM Japan Ltd. launched a new service for corporate clients called Asset Recovery Solutions (ARS) on November 11, 2004. This is an enhanced version of its existing recycling service for used personal computer products, known as the IBM Recycle Solution Service (RRS).

The greatest feature of ARS is to assess the value of used PCs free of charge. Specialized staff assess the value of used PCs owned by enterprises at no charge, prepare a list of these computer assets for review by the client, and recommend how they should be handled.

The used PCs are classified into two groups, reusable products and recyclable products. IBM offers a buyback service for reusable products and a collection and recycling service for recyclable products. IBM also provides disk overwrite services on request. The overall aim of these services is to reduce the client's operational and financial costs associated with the disposal of used PC products.

By enhancing its recycling services for used PC products, IBM states that it aims to promote the 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle) in order to help establish a recycling-based society and increase the environmental and recycling awareness of its customers.
