NEC Aims for Zero Net CO2 Emissions in FY2010

Japan's NEC Corporation recently announced its environmental management plan, the NEC Environmental Management Vision 2010, aimed at reducing to zero the net carbon dioxide emissions associated with the company in fiscal year 2010.

NEC estimates that the volume of CO2 emissions that will be associated with it in the target year 2010 will be five million tonnes: one million tonnes directly produced from NEC's business activities and four million indirectly from customers through product use. The company aims to offset these CO2 emissions through improving the energy efficiency of its products and providing IT solutions to reduce the emissions of its customers and society.

Specific efforts include:
1. Shifting to business structures with lower environmental impact by doubling the company's software and service businesses, which accounted for 30 percent of its entire business activities in fiscal 2000.
2. Boosting the use of renewable resources and energy to at least 10 percent of the company's total consumption.
3. Educating employees to improve environmental awareness so that every employee can proactively engage in environmental conservation.

NEC also aims to help its customers reduce CO2 emissions through active information services and by providing software solution packages, in order to reduce paper use and make operations more efficient.
