Fujitsu Limited has started the operation of the NAS (natrium-sulfur) battery system, which places less of a load on the environment, at its Akiruno Technology Center in Tokyo, Japan.
The NAS batteries have an accumulation capacity three times larger than that of lead batteries. They can be charged at night and can be discharged when there are power outages or during peak hours. Compared to a gas turbine system, the NAS battery system is expected to reduce CO2 emissions by about 14,000 tonnes and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by about 18 tonnes of per year.
