According to a summary by Japan's Ministry of the Environment, the amount of PET (polyethylene terephthalate) bottles collected under the Containers and Packaging Recycling Law by municipalities across Japan was 161,600 tonnes in fiscal 2001, a 29% increase over the previous year. The collection rate for PET bottles was 40.1%, up 5.6 points from the previous year, and it topped 40% for the first time.
A further rise in the collection rate is expected for fiscal 2002, since many other municipalities are planning to start collecting PET bottles for recycling.
