One Year after PCB Treatment Law Enacted

A year has passed since the PCB Treatment Law became effective in July 2001. PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) has been banned in Japan since 1974, but it is reported there are still approximately 4.4 million transformers and condensers containing PCB in Japan.

The law requires all PCB to be treated so that it is rendered harmless by 2016. The market for this PCB treatment is reportedly 200 billion yen (about US$1.7 billion @ 1 dollar=118yen). Manufacturers of such equipment and plants have begun to compete for orders.
