The Ministry of the Environment announced that the emission of greenhouse effect gases in the industrial sector for FY 2000 was 495 million metric tons, down 0.2 percent from the previous year. This is a 0.9% increase from the 1990 level, which is the base year of the Kyoto Protocol.

On the other hand, the non-industrial sectors emitted 318 million tons, up 2.9 percent from 1999.

As a whole, Japan emitted 1,332 million tons in 2000, an increase of 0.2 percent from the previous year. But this number is 8% above the 1990 level. There is a wide gap to the Kyoto Protocol target of a 6% reduction by the year 2010.
