Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity NGO / Citizen

The Non-Profit Organization (NPO) Environmental Conservation Association in Aizu (NPO ECA) was presented Japan's 2012 Environment Minister's Award for Activities to Fight Global Warming on November 30, 2012. The award has been hosted by the Ministry of the Environment since 1998 to recognize individuals and organizations for their distinguished achievements in promoting global warming countermeasures.

NPO ECA, based in the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, conducts environmental research and organizes activities that promote energy saving and renewable energy, etc., for environmental conservation. It also provides environmental learning opportunities -- including hands-on programs involving collecting organisms and conducting water quality surveys at a research pond at the University of Aizu -- and hosts tours of a waste oil recycling facility.

The NPO also organizes environmental seminars and on-demand lectures from visiting experts to promote renewable energy, as well as research field work and study sessions on small hydroelectric generation, all of which is expected to encourage regional development.

The award, under the environmental education and awareness-raising category, recognizes the people in NPO ECA for their efforts in providing experience-oriented environmental education focused on preventing global warming and encouraging the introduction of renewable energy.
