Nippon Keidanren (Japan Business Federation), a organization comprised of large Japanese companies and industry associations, released its Biodiversity Declaration on March 17, 2009. It includes guidelines on measures to support biodiversity conservation, and represents an expansion on the Nature Conservation Declaration released by the organization in 2003.

The importance of biodiversity is not fully understood by many because it is hard to measure. The declaration is based on the idea that we need to recognize impacts on biodiversity caused by socioeconomic activities and to address the critical situation of biodiversity loss.

The new declaration includes 15 action guidelines for member companies, as well as the following seven declarations:

  1. Appreciate the blessings of nature and harmonize natural cycles and business activities.

  2. Take actions with a global view in response to the biodiversity crisis.

  3. Address issues proactively and consistently to benefit biodiversity.

  4. Promote resource-recycling management practices.

  5. Infuse learning about biodiversity into industry, lifestyles, and culture.

  6. Collaborate with domestic and international stakeholders.

  7. Take initiatives to move society toward actively fostering biodiversity.

The declaration and action guidelines will be updated in accordance with progress and needs, said the Federation.
