Keywords: Ecosystems / Biodiversity Government

Japan's Ministry of the Environment has reported the results of the Tripartite Director General Meeting (TDGM) on Dust and Sandstorms (DSS) held on March 12 and 13, 2007 in Ulsan, South Korea. At the meeting, the environmental directors general of Japan, China, and South Korea discussed regional cooperation for countermeasures of DSS. The three countries agreed to hold a TDGM meeting once a year, conduct joint research, and urge relevant international organizations such as Global Environmental Facility to immediately implement the ADB-GEF Project Phase II, a project to establish a regional monitoring and early warning network for DSS.

The three countries' directors general in charge of DSS discussed the issue for the first time in this meeting, which was held in response to the agreement in the 8th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting in December 2006.

The second TDGM meeting is scheduled to place in Japan in the fall of 2007.
