Experts from around the world gathered in Sapporo, northern Japan, to promote sustainable forest management, from July 24 to 28, 2006. The meeting, titled "For the Promotion of the Sustainable Forest Management of the World's Forests: The Use of Criteria and Indicators and its Potential," was sponsored and organized by the Forestry Agency of Japan.

On July 26, an open forum was held with participants from the 12 member countries of the Montreal Process (including Japan) and other Asia-Pacific nations, who made presentations and reports over the current state of forest resources and industry in their countries, as well as the practical application and potential of the "Montreal Process Criteria and Indicators," an internationally agreed basis to objectively monitor and evaluate the progress of sustainable forest management.
