An award ceremony for the 2004 Community-Based Food Education Competition was held on January 16, 2005 at the "Nippon Food Education Fair" of the Second Food Education Festival. This year a group from Enzan City (Yamanashi Prefecture) won the top award.

To help the public establish proper eating habits, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries of Japan advocates food education that nurtures individuals' own judgement relating to food. To that end, the competition is held annually to promote food education at the community level. In fiscal 2004, there were 237 entries in the competition covering four areas: improving dietary habits; food education; the food industry; and the agriculture, forestry and fisheries industries.

This year the grand prize, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Award, was granted to the Committee for Better Dietary Habits at the Health and Welfare Center of Enzan City, for a program it calls "From Hand to Hand -- Using the Hand to Measure Food Servings." Utilizing the fact that hand size is an indicator of one's body size, the committee developed a method for anyone to use their own hand size to easily gauge the appropriate amount of each food category for one meal. The award honored the group's efforts to improve citizens' dietary habits by distributing brochures and posters, and holding workshops at nursery schools and family cooking seminars.
