Shiga University Starts Environmental Assistant Training Program

Keywords: Education NGO / Citizen University / Research institute

Shiga University has launched an Assistant Training Program for Environmental Learning in fiscal 2005 in which students completing the program will be certified as "Environmental Learning Assistants."

An Environmental Learning Assistant is defined as a person that not only has specialized knowledge about the environment but is also capable of taking a leadership role in solving environmental problems in a school or community by giving appropriate guidance and advice.

Acknowledging the need for such experts not only in Shiga Prefecture but throughout Japan, the University started this program with the cooperation of local organizations for environmental education in order to foster practical leaders in environmental education and awareness-raising.

Applicants should be either 1) adults who have graduated from Omi Lifelong College, which is managed by the Lifelong Learning Division of the Shiga Prefectural Board of Education, or 2) currently employed schoolteachers. For the first year, five persons will be accepted from each of these two categories. As well as taking compulsory courses, students will be required to undergo practical training and submit a research paper in order to obtain certification as an Environmental Learning Assistant.
